Biography

Julien Martineau, born in 1978, is one of a few mandolinists in Europe to have established a prominent artistic carrier. He is highly valued by well known musical contemporaries for his musical qualities and the refined tone of his playing, far from the clichés of the mandolin. With acclaimed pianist Bertrand Chamayou, he has developed a program of Sonatas for mandolin and piano that spans the 18th century to modern times.  With Jean-Francois Zygel he has worked on several projects which include Beethoven for mandolin and piano, among other pieces.

Julien Martineau has played as a soloist in many prominent concert halls and at numerous prestigious music festivals. Most notably in France :  Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Grand Théâtre in Aix-en-Provence, Halle aux Grains in Toulouse, the Sorbonne in Paris, and Festival de Besançon.  He has also played at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva, Switzerland and the Music Atlantico in the Azores.

He has been invited to play with many orchestras, including the Orchestre Métropolitain of Lisbon, the Orchestre de Chambre of Toulouse, The Solistes de l’Orchestre du Capitole of Toulouse, and the Ensemble Baroque of Toulouse.  Julien Martineau is a regular participant in the musical seasons of the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, the Opéra de Paris, the Opéra de Lyon, and the Orchestras des Pays de la Loire, Radio France and the Suisse Romande in Geneva.

He actively performs chamber music especially with his friends from the Orchestra of the Capitole of Toulouse, offering Toulouse music lovers original works as in the soon to be performed Viennese quartet for mandolin and string instruments.

In 2005, Julien Martineau joined the staff of the Conservatoire à Rayonnement régional (CRR) in Toulouse as a professor of mandolin. At the Université de la Sorbonne in Paris, he has graduated master degree in musicology.
